Some thoughts and discussions from me.

I’m often asked which supplements that I take on a daily basis to support my training and health. I actually don’t have a line up of additions outside of a balanced diet with ample fruits and veggies:

  • protein powder for post-workout
  • fish oil the first half of my cycle
  • vitamin D/calcium now and then
  • Branched chain amino acids every now and then

Today, I want to discuss more on the first one. Generally, I only take, and advice my clients to take protein powder once a day, as it’s best to get the majority of your nutrients from whole foods sources.

One of the second most common questions I get is: which protein powder do you recommend? The thing is, aside from one I regularly purchase (which is just way too pricey!) I switch, trying new ones with decent stats. There are SO many great protein powders out there, and I was recently given the chance to review yet another one: Isopure.

Now, I try very hard to only review products that I use on a regular basis, and I chose to review Isopure for a few reasons:

  • It’s made from whey protein isolate
  • It has 26 grams of protein per 29g serving
  • It’s very low carb
  • Lack of “funky” ingredient list

Isopure sent me their unflavored whey protein isolate. Unflavored protein powders might seem a little boring, but I actually prefer them over their flavored counterparts sometimes because get to choose how they’re flavored, and with what they’re flavored. That said, if you’re into the flavored variety, Isopure has no shortage of yummy sounding flavors, including dutch chocolate, cookies & cream, mint chocolate chip, and more.

The first thing I made with them was waffles with my go-to protein recipe – protein powder, oats – ground up in a blender – a bit of coconut flour, an egg, and almond milk.

The protein powder blended very nicely into the mixture, and I sweetened them up with some lemon stevia drops, and topped it with a mixture of Greek yogurt, almond butter, and blueberries.

This was my post-workout breakfast last week, which was perfect for eating right after a tough lifting sesh because each serving of the Isopure contains 10,000+ mg of BCAA’s.

Admittedly, I mostly use protein powder in protein smoothie form. It’s just what I crave after a tough workout!

This one was Cherry Vanilla flavor, and here’s how I made it:

  • 1 c. almond or cashewmilk
  • 1 scoop unflavored Isopure whey protein isolate
  • 1/2 c. frozen cherries
  • 1/2 c. frozen banana
  • handful of spinach
  • a few drops of cherry vanilla stevia

Oh! And I’d be remiss if I didn’t share with you the protein coconut water drink they sent over, too:

I have no idea how they incorporated protein into this drink because there’s absolutely no gritty protein powder taste to it at all! It just tastes like coconutty fruit juice! In each bottle there’s 20 grams of protein, and there’s only 100 calories per bottle. Game changer.

Now, this one does contain red dye, which I’m not a huge fan of, but I have to say for me, that’s a small rock. 99% of my diet consists of foods that don’t contain dyes, so ingesting it every now and then doesn’t worry me too much.
