Some thoughts and discussions from me.
Hello, hello
Glad that you all are excited about GoodPops! Today’s another steamer – and another good day for a mid-day POP.
So, I told you all on Monday about our first 14er, and hike up to the summit of Quandary Peak. I just so happened to photograph most of my eats that day, too, so for today’s What I Ate Wednesday is on how I fueled up – and during – the 6 hour 40 minute hike.
Like I said on Monday, we woke up at about twenty after 5:00, and got ready to head out. On the way to the trailhead, around 6:00, I had a jar of overnight oats for breakfast.
It was pretty easy to do, actually. Beforehand, I just put cottage cheese and almond milk in an almost- empty PB jar, and then in a little baggy, I had protein powder, oats, and hemp hearts. Before leaving, I just added the contents of the baggy to the jar, stirred, and ate! Yum.
This held me over for about three hours of the hike. I felt like I was hitting a wall at one point, so during a rest, I sat down and ate an Almond Walnut Macadamia KIND bar for a snack.
It’s crazy – I instantly felt so much better. My body must have really needed the fuel. It helped me power on for the next 45 minutes or so until we reached the summit.
Then at the summit, I had…lunch? I’m not really sure what to call it, because I think it was around 10:00. Whatever you call it, I had a PBJ on sourdough and a few sips of beer at 14,265 feet above sea level.
I swear it was the best peanut butter & jelly sandwich I’ve ever had in my life… The beer? Notsomuch.
It took us a little more than a couple hours (I think…I really had no sense of time) to make our way back down the mountain, and I didn’t feel like I needed anything during that time. Besides, we had plans of going to Breckenridge for lunch, and by the time we reached the restaurant, I was STARVIN.
Took care of that with a bacon guacamole cheeseburger and fries I stuffed myself, and again, best burger and fries I’ve ever had, even though I had one the night before, haha. I also had a 90 Shilling.
After lunch, we moseyed around Breck before heading back home. On the way, we spontaneously pulled over to see some BMX action!
These guys were doing backflips, front flips, suicides, and all sorts of crazy stuff!!
After getting our fill of vicarious bike action, we all said our goodbyes and headed on home. At this point, I felt like a truck had run over me! I got home, immediately unpacked, took a nice long epsom salt bath, and then did not move from the couch until around 9:00 when I figured I should probably eat something else.
I wasn’t even hungry at this point, but Lauren wore her heart rate monitor during the hike, and it let us know the hike we just did provided an ample calorie burn – upwards of 4,000 CALORIES!! So yeah, I figured I should eat more, even after inhaling a burger and fries earlier.
I did the laziest thing possible and heated up some leftover chili in the microwave. In a giant mixing bowl (seriously,) at that. On the side, I had a tortilla with PB smeared in the middle. Yum, yum.
What a day! And not a single vegetable in there. Oops…unless you count fries as a veg haha
Are you hungry after a big endurance event or workout? Or is your appetite suppressed?
My appetite is always rearing to go after a tough workout!
I am usually not hungry at all. I have to wait a bit and then usually have something easy to get down like a smoothie!

On my 14-er I had a pb and banana sandwich on the drive over to the mountain, a KIND bar halfway up, and then an apple and some Cliff Shot Blocks on the way down since I just wasn’t very hungry. I agree- I tend to loose my appetite while doing things like that! I did, however, have a hot chocolate at the top (there’s a gift shop at the top of Pikes Peak since you can take the train or drive up as well) and it was the BEST hot chocolate I’d ever had in my life! Haha annoying though that I worked so hard to get up there only to find a bunch of tourists who’d ridden up… But I won’t complain about the bathroom!
My appetite is usually HUGE after a long workout like a hike, but sometimes not until the day after. A couple weeks ago, my brother and I went on a tough 4 hour hike, and my stomach was a bottomless pit the next day!
We also had pb&j sandwiches at the summit–best hiking food ever!

You must have a better appetite control than me! My longer workouts probably only burn 2000 calories or so, but I feel like I need to eat 5000 to make up for it! I think it also varies between strength and cardio. Back when I used to do dance competitions and concerts, I’d be doing hours and hours of intense dancing all day and barely eat anything until I got home. My hunger was definitely suppressed! Now I do a 45 minute workout and eat all the food haha

I’m sure the tomatoes in the chili would have counted as veggies 😉 And as for my appetite, it depends on the kind of exercise. A hard cardio workout and my appetite is nonexistent, but strength training leaves me wanting to inhale the entire kitchen.

Wow! 4000 calories that’s crazy – but I can see how that’s possible. Quite the hike! I usually find I’m not hungry right after long workouts… but it generally quicks in later in the day or especially the next day.

I had to laugh when I read that it was the best PB & J you’ve ever had. People are always wondering how we can eat the freeze dried meals and endless nuts and granola in the backcountry, and I have to convince them anything is delicious after a hard day of backpacking!

oh man a 14er is INSANEEEEEE haha I loved this post though – I probably would have consumed ALL THE FOOD after a hike like that!

My appetite totally goes awol after a long endurance workout. Always bizarre when that happens, I just try to force myself to eat at least a little something.
Haha, when you’re burning that many calories who needs veggies 😉
