Some thoughts and discussions from me.

CoconutOil Coffee (1)

Coconut oil is a great source of fat for a number of reasons. I use it specifically as a means to get some fuel into the body before training, without ratcheting up insulin levels.

Coconut oil is a medium chain triglyceride (MCT,) and is able to be as rapidly absorbed in the body for a workout as glucose, but also while allowing the body to make its own insulin to use.

Now, ideally, I’d have my clients eat a small pre-workout meal composed of certain macronutrients before training, but to be honest, some of them wake up before 5a to workout. It’s highly unlikely for those who are waking up that early just to get their workout in, will wake up any earlier to also get food in.

And I understand.

Some of these clients will instead, use coconut oil to get in some type of fuel before training, albeit still a very small amount.

The second problem: the taste takes some getting used to.

Now, my gut reaction is to say it’s not really about liking the taste — it’s just consuming MCT before your training…like a supplement. But — I draw the line with coffee. I look forward to that first cup so adamantly that sometimes I dream about it. The last thing I want to do is make it so I have to choke it down.

And let’s be clear – I actually enjoy the taste of coconut oil in my coffee now. But, I made a slow transition there.

How to Make coconut Oil in Your Coffee Taste Good

1. Use a liquid coconut oil – and one that tastes good!

I use this brand myself, and I love the taste. I’ve tried solid coconut oil before, but it just tasted a little too…oily. I know that’s exactly how one would describe oil (lol,) but trust me – liquid tastes better than solid.

2. Start by adding it to the mix

Before using just coconut oil, I added about a teaspoon the the way I was already drinking my coffee, which was with just a splash of 2% milk. It didn’t change it up too much, but yes, you can taste the coconut oil.

3. Slowly decrease the milk

(or sugar, or creamer, or whatever you’re currently using.) Over time, you’ll likely adjust to the flavor and it will start tasting good. Some of my clients also add cinnamon to theirs, of which they enjoy the taste.

And that’s really it! Use a liquid coconut oil, add it to your current mix, and decrease the other stuff over time until you’ve got just coconut oil!
