Some thoughts and discussions from me.
Some thoughts and discussions from me.
This week I’m headed to Oregon to hike all the waterfall trails and visit all the Willamette Valley wineries – and I’m taking along my favorite healthy road trip snacks.
I’m super excited because, waterfalls, but also because my all time favorite wine is a pinot noir from the Willamette Valley. In fact, no less than 3 of my friends got me a bottle of the delicious variety of red for my birthday this year #theyknowmewell
Alas, one can’t sustain themselves on vino and water alone, so I’ll be taking along some of my favorite healthy road trip snacks (even though I’ll be flying to my destination.)
While I definitely plan on frequenting my fair share of restaurants, I’m staying somewhat out in the boonies, so these snacks will provide satiation during long car rides, hikes, and when we don’t feel like dining out.
Now, there are a plethora of healthy options you can take with you while traveling, but when it comes to packing my healthy road trip snacks, I like to use the following strategy:
–try and break up the snacks by macros – protein, carb, and fat – as much as possible
This simply means instead of opting for a bag of trail mix with nuts, fruit, and chocolate in the mix, opt for nuts-only (i.e. primarily fats.) Or, instead of bringing jerky that has just as many carbs as it does grams of protein, opt for one with better macros.
My reasoning for this is that I can control how I’m fueling my body with these choices, and thusly, feel better whilst adventuring.
Now, I absolutely don’t stress about it, and don’t freak out if things aren’t perfect. I don’t track macros while traveling – ever – but I do tend to stick with the macros-ish (that “ish” is so, SO important, friends) and estimate the portions.
That said, here are some of my favorite healthy road trip snacks.
Listen, this won’t be a long list, because let’s be honest, snacks are going to be a small percentage of what I eat while away. They’ll likely suffice as breakfast a couple mornings, hiking snacks, and perhaps car/plane snacks. The rest of the time will be meals eaten out, or cooked in my cabin.
Walnuts and cashews are my personal favorite, so I’ll likely pack a zip lock baggie full of these guys.
These guys are carb bombs, which yes, do have quite a bit of fructose from the fruit, but also glucose, and will be a great post-hiking snack. My favorite is the pineapple coconut chia, but the cherry apple chia is good, too.
One of my clients actually recommended this brand to me, but the macros are spot on, leaving this tasty little beef/elf/ostrich stick a good source of on-the-go protein. The stats on this one is 2C 14P 2.5F – not bad!
The medium chain triglyceride in coconut oil, unlike many other fats like nuts, is actually used for fuel as rapidly as glucose in the body, so it provides for a great pre-workout (or pre-hike 😉 )option without as big of a spike of insulin. I like these individual packets for travel convenience.
These are more of a mix of protein, carbs, and fat, depending on the brand, but sometimes getting all three in one tasty bar is a good thing. My favorite options are Quest, ThinkThin (in Chunky PB – the one’s with 20g. of protein,) Power Crunch (vanilla is tasty!) and Oatmega (I love ’em all.)
I’m actually working on a complete Travel Guide to stay on plan with workouts + nutrition – whilst still enjoying your travels – soon. Stay tuned for it!
Now you tell me! What are some of your favorite healthy road trip snacks?
That travel guide you’re working on sounds awesome! I am heading to Oregon for the first time in October and I can’t wait.
I try and do similar approach I think! Keeping it simple and minimal ingredients. Raw nuts and seeds, protein bars, raw fruits and veggies.
Great list of snacks! Can’t wait to see your travel guide!
