Some thoughts and discussions from me.
Some thoughts and discussions from me.
Good morning!
First up, I want to talk to you all about Under Armour’s campaign, What’s Beautiful, which I’m partnering up with through as a Fitfluential ambassador. It’s all about pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone, and into achieving a goal you never thought would be possible. It’s about redefining the female athlete.
It’s about setting goals, and not being afraid to actually go after it. Put this way, it’s purpose really struck a chord with me. I don’t set goals too often for the fear of either a.) not being able to put 100% into those goals or b.) giving 100% and still not accomplishing them. Well, yesterday I decided to GET OVER my goal-setting fear by creating a creating a TEAM on the Under Armour What’s Beautiful website.
Now I know I’m not alone in my goal-setting fear, which is why I created Team I Am Not Afraid. In hopes that other women- friends, family, YOU, would join me in Conquering a Fitness Fear – a team provides a support network for going after a big scary fitness goal. Although the team goal is to conquer a fitness goal, we can all make personal goals, too.
My personal goal is to advance my yoga practice – particularly by going upside down. Whenever I’m in a class, and we go from chair pose to crow or into headstand, I stay in my safe zone, watching everyone else take flight. I always just automatically assume it’s something I can’t do – and I don’t know why I do that. Well, no more! You may remember a couple Fridays ago I went to a yoga inversions – and I worked in it, but the fear was still there. My goal is to get over that fear!!
Next time I’m in class, and there’s an opportunity to try an inversion, I’m going to (safely) take it one step further than I have before. I hope you’ll join me in setting a goal to conquer your own fitness fear, too. If you’d like to do that, you can do so here!
And speaking of trying new things, yesterday morning after teaching my interval class, I headed over to Boulder Creek Path for the first time to go for a run…for the first time in a very long time.
This warm spring weather has been calling me to lace up my running shoes and go for a run, so I did just that yesterday morning. I ran on the trail that runs along the creek, with ample beautiful, mountain views.
I ran for about 45 minutes, and it was a humbling experience. About every 5 minutes, I had to stop and walk, which was really ok by me, because it allowed me to enjoy the views just that much more.
Funny story – along with waterfalls, rushing creeks, and gorgeous foothills, I also ran past a group of…folks…sitting at a picnic table along the trail, passing around a joint…at 8:30 in the morning. It’s Boulder, I’m sure weirder things have happened, but it took me at a surprise at 8:30 in the morning on a running path!
Aside from a run, I also took a great vinyasa class, lined up a couple clients for today, and had a (inconclusive and further confusing) doctor’s appointment. In the evening, Shane and I met up with friends for the Food Truck Festival Monday in the park. This time I went with Pad Thai from a new Thai restaurant in the neighborhood’s truck, and then split some millet tots with my friend, Katie:
It’s just like tater tots, but with millet – and they were awesome!
followed by the froyo truck:
I haven’t had froyo in forever, because I’m kind of over it, and never really dug it that much to begin with. But this was a nice sweet treat to end the night on I also had some of Shane’s waffle cake.
Have a great Tuesday, friends! And HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my friend, Natalie
So tell me, what’s your/would be your fitness fear to conquer??
The What’s Beautiful campaign sounds like an awesome one, love your I am not afraid team! When I have more time (I’m late for work already haha) I need to look into it. My fitness goal right now is to finish my Tough Mudder with a smile on my face…and hopefully not get electrocuted too badly. I’m trying not to be afraid!

you totally got this!!!!!
My next fitness goal is to run a marathon this October. I love inversions in yoga. I am not very good at handstands, but I’m trying to work my way into them. It’s definitely a fear I want to conquer as well.

I love your goal! You’re going to rock it! I’m so excited for this campaign!
Although pot isn’t legal here in California, it might as well be- I see people smoking pot all the time, everywhere!
I’m so jealous of your hiking trails! I like in a city called Davis, and it is almost completely flat, except for one little hill. Crazy!

That’s pretty much how it was when I lived in Normal!
I love this! I secretly want to qualify for and run the Boston Marathon, but I have never publicly declared that as a goal because at this point in my life I am SO not that fast and am afraid of not achieving it! Lame, I know.

Good luck! I know you’ve got it-I really believe the biggest impediment to our goals is mental! I think my biggest fitness fear is running. I’ve been told all my life that I run funny and that I’m slow, and I’ve just convinced myself it’s not a sport for me!

That’s exciting, Ashley!!
I actually LOVE goals, so it’s awesome that you’re encouraging others to go after it. I have a thought brewing in my head of a far-fetched goal, but it’s not something I ready to commit to yet. We’ll see. 🙂

Love the idea of conquering aversions – I can do crow, but I’m terrified of even attempting handstands.

Hmmmmm, after our inversion discussion before I’m thinking I should make this a goal one day. I haven’t been able to practice as much lately but once I get back to it? Ah, you’re breaking me out of my shell!

Good luck with your inversions!
My goal is to go out of my comfort zone. I am leaping from simply running to biking and swimming…I am going to do a triathlon!

Hah! See, I set a non-goal goal because I hate setting goals too. Ooops. I ran on the Boulder Creek path when I visited in March. I didn’t take walk breaks and made my lungs so mad my exercise-induced athsma came back after being dormant for a few years. It was worth it though!

Millet tots? Hmm. They look yummy! 🙂
I’m doing this too. I’ll check out your team. Mine is Sistas of Strength!
I LOVE your goal! I have a huge fear of group fitness classes. I’ve never done one, but I think that will change next weekend at Blend!
My approach to running while on vacation was the same. We were running trails with crazy hills so when I felt like walking I did, no pressure. It gave me the chance to just live in the moment, and of course take pictures! I loved every minute of it 🙂

I love the idea of team endurance, because you can really go any which way with that goal. I can’t wait to see where your journey takes you.
