Some thoughts and discussions from me.
I didn’t feel at all like grocery shopping this past weekend.
Correction – I didn’t have time to even think about grocery shopping! Then Tuesday came around, and I had a busy day of teaching and training. When it came time for dinner Tuesday night, I noticed the fridge and cabinets were a little bare:
Then Wednesday, after a failed attempt at getting a CO license at the DMV, I finally went grocery shopping instead. Re-stock time. Today I thought I’d show you what I got in my grocery haul. I also got a Vitacost package this week. This is actually a pretty typical week of groceries for me.
Vitacost haul:
My monthly Vitacost hauls have turned into bi-monthly. Ah well. They always offer awesome discounts that entice me. Then before I know it I’m building my shopping cart and hitting submit (save $10 on your next order!) In this haul:
quinoa pasta, crackers, 4 cans of coconut milk (which I pour into mason jars, and use for anything from curries and stews to cereal milk – seriously, it’s in the bare fridge picture!) Udi’s granola, Love Crunch granola, canned pumpkin, jojoba oil, Once Again crunchy almond butter, and a free packet of whey powder.
Whole Foods Haul:
I was very proud of myself to sticking mostly to the list at WF yesterday!
On the list: lettuce, lemons, sweet potatoes, meat (chicken, ground buffalo,) turkey, brussels sprouts, frozen veggies, eggs, ice cream for Shane
Impulse buys: sparkling water, Hail Merry macaroons – the chocolate flavor are OUT of this world, ice cream for moi – NadaMoo’s, a coconut milk ice cream I discovered last week. It’s the best coconut ice cream I’ve ever tried.
Sprouts Haul:
And then I went to Sprouts, and my good intentions of sticking to the list flew right out the automatic opening doors. The sales got the best of me. Ready for this?
On the list: chicken, cat food, bacon, bread, and avocados
Impulse buys: Hansen’s Diet soda for Shane (they were on sale for $1.99/6pack!) KIND bars, Organic Valley vanilla milk (on sale for $1.99 for a 4 pack!) chicken nuggets (on sale,) Applegate sausage (on sale,) frozen basmati rice (frozen AND discontinued, which makes my food heart very very sad,) Alden’s organic ice cream (on sale for $4.99!!) pumpkin seeds, a second pack of bacon, chicken sausage, and apple sausage (yup, on sale!) bananas, turkey and ham.
Ha. Oops. But there were some seriously awesome sales. Like Shane’s Diet Hansen’s soda for $1.99 a 6-pack. And avocados for $77. And a savings of $1.20 on applegate farms bacon and chicken nuggets! And I picked up like 3 packages of the frozen jasmine rice.
Although, now I’m not so excited to dive right into that rice. I got this month’s IDEA Fitness Journal in the mail this week, and just read about how rice from Thailand could have lead levels higher than those considered safe by the USDA!
Hopefully, since this rice is organic, its lead levels are fairly low!
So happy it’s Friday today I’ve got a client this morning, and then I’ll be working on some online programs. I’m hoping to get some relaxing in this weekend!
How much do you stick to the list while grocery shopping?
Haha! Impulse buys definitely get the best of me too sometimes. I ran into Trader Joe’s just to grab bread that I was running low on, and walked out with a full bag of groceries. Cherries were SO cheap! I can’t say no to a good sale!

Probably 80% of the time we do with 1-3 impulse buys each trip. We shop together which sometimes helps, we can talk each other out of things!

Those hail merry macaroons are INSANE. I have never had the Nada Moo ice cream – sounds like I need to try!
I’m generally pretty good about sticking to my mental list of what I need although I’ve definitely been known to get suckered by the occasional impulse buy. 😉

My ability to stick to a shopping list is inversely proportional to how hungry I am 🙂 I love those Applegate chicken nuggets!

I live across the street from a grocery and Tom works near the two other stores we go to a lot, so we go often for recipe-specific things. I think that helps us to stick to a list a little better. But things definitely find there way into my cart I wasn’t expecting 🙂

Haha! I do the same thing at Sprouts! Did you know they offer printable coupons online? Good ones too! I actually plan my meals and shopping list around their weekly circulars. I typically go between there, Costco, TJ’s and Whole Foods for my grocery shopping. It’s so hard to stick to a list though!
I’ve stuck to my grocery list maybe twice in my whole life. I am so bad with impulse purchases – even if it’s just one or two things. They always get me!

I do my best to stick to my grocery list, because a student budget means I kind of have to. I do throw a few impulse buys in there once in a while if I have a little wiggle room though!

We make lists before we go…but we bargain with the list if we find something good.
“Oooh, I want ABC!”
“But its not on the list…”
“Well, I don’t really need ZYX, we’ll trade!”
And you still haven’t gotten your license stuff figured out?! That sucks. I’d say go a holiday week but this kind of is a holiday week… We went the week of Christmas and there were about 3 other people there, it was so quick.

I’m pretty much a stickler when it comes to my grocery list otherwise I could get out of control and/or I find that I will forget something. Every once in awhile I allow myself to get a few extra things, but try not to make a habit out of it!

In the past, 70% of my groceries were impulse buys. I changed that by doing a list and spending just the time to get the list done. Avocados in salads my favorites 🙂
I am the WORST shopper ever. I can’t stick to a list to save my life! I’ll come home with 20 things NOT on the list and forgot the one thing I went to the store for!
And I definitely go to the store almost every single day for something. That madness has got to end.

I try to stick to a list. I’m better if I don’t have help at the store. 😉
I need to check that info out on the rice! Scary!

I just tried some of the Blonde Hail Merry Macroons this week.. SO GOOD!! I’m going to try to recreate something similar at home. I will have to check out Vita cost! 🙂 I really wish we had a whole foods here. My sister and I were just talking about that today. Thank God for Trader Joes
